Daniel knew something was wrong with Luke the minute the man walked into his office and shut the door.

Earlier, Daniel had convened another staff meeting with the officers coming onto day duty and the ones signing out from night shift. Luke had been eerily quiet during that meeting, even as they discussed strategies and revised patrol schedules since they were down two officers. He’d made it clear he had no intention of reinstating Sharon Baker at this time, and Judy would be on sick leave for at least a week, and after that on desk duty until her injuries were healed enough for her to return to her regular routine.

Now Luke took a seat in the chair opposite Daniel’s desk. “He’s hiding out somewhere. He could be moving around from place to place. A day in one place, a night in another.”

“That’s why we’re widening the search area. Like I said in the meeting, I’ve sent BOLOs to the Marietta police, Newport. St. Mary’s, Vienna, Riverview, even Parkersburg in West Virginia. He’s obviously got transportation, so he could be anywhere between attacks.” He studied Luke for a moment. “You seemed to have your mind on something else half the time during the meeting, Luke. What’s going on?”

Luke met Daniel’s gaze. “I need to tell you something. Yesterday, Betty paid a visit to Sharon at her apartment.”

Daniel nodded. “I heard.”

Luke shook his head. “I guess I should have known. Sharon called you, I assume.”

“You bet. She says she fears for her life. She wanted me to arrest Betty for threatening her.”

“What did you tell her?”

“I told her to come in and file for an Order of Protection if she felt she was in imminent danger. The same thing I would tell any citizen. To be honest, Luke, I think a judge would probably grant it.”

Luke shifted in his seat. “Is she going to do it?”

Daniel shrugged. “No idea. She hung up on me.”

“I don’t know what got into Betty. Her behavior lately... I just don’t know where her mind is at.”

“I could ask my mother to have a talk with her. They’re close friends.”

“Maybe she’d take some advice or even confide in Adelaide. Lord knows she isn’t speaking to me at the moment. But I hate to add to your mom’s burden, since Vernon’s probably going to need some special care once he gets out of the hospital.”

“My mother loves Betty. She’ll make the time. I’ll call her later this morning.”

Luke got up. “Okay. I need to get back on patrol. Thanks, Daniel.”

As Luke opened the office door, Daniel said, “We need to do all we can to keep this feud between Sharon and Betty from escalating.”

“In other words, keep an eye on my wife.”

“Just be vigilant, Luke. Very vigilant.”

Moments later, Daniel was shocked to see Judy come into his office... in uniform.

“Before you say a word,” she said, closing the door, “I want you to know I’m ready to come back.”

He stood up and stared at her. “You’re on sick leave.
